Frequently Asked Questions:

What does the calendar for the season look like?

Origins Performing Arts typically holds auditions in September for that year’s performing ensembles. The audition process consists of an initial round, followed by call-backs, usually held the following weekend. Rehearsals take place on Sundays from October through early November. After the UIL State Marching Contest, rehearsals switch to Saturday-Sunday weekends for the remainder of the season. Occasionally, Friday evening rehearsals are scheduled for design camps or before show weekends.

In late December, each ensemble holds a 4-5 day "Holiday Camp," with rehearsals typically running from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. We strive to schedule this camp before Christmas, allowing our members to spend the holiday season with their families. However, school calendars and rehearsal facility availability sometimes mean that the camp takes place between the two holidays.

Show season runs from late January through April, culminating in Dayton, Ohio for the WGI World Championships. For the World Championships event, we depart Austin on Tuesday afternoon and return late Sunday evening or early Monday morning. Our end-of-season banquet is held either on Sunday immediately following the WGI World Championships in Ohio or the following weekend in the Austin, TX area.

How much does it cost to participate in Origins?

Tuition to participate in Origins World/Open varies each season due to a number of external factors. In 2024, the tuition was around $2,200. However, due to inflation and increased costs of goods and services, tuition for the 2026 season is expected to be approximately $2,500–$2,600 for the World Team and $2,300–$2,400 for the Open Team.

What Size Equipment does Origins Spin?

We spin 39” King Sabres and 37.5” KingKong Rifles.

If I make the team will Origins provide me with equipment or do I need to bring my own?

We will provide flags and rifles; however, individuals interested in auditioning for sabre spinning will need to bring their own.

Is there an age limit to audition?

Yes, While there is no age limit for World Class, Open class has an age limit of 23 years old. Performers can only compete in that classification as long as they don’t turn 24 during the season.

Do I have to attend both days?

Yes. The official small group audition takes place on Sunday; however, you are evaluated throughout the weekend.

What should I wear?

Form fitting black dance attire.

Will there be a meal break?

Yes, There will be 2 meal breaks on Saturday and 1 on Sunday. There are many food options within 5-10 minutes of the facility. We recommend bringing snacks and a 1/2 gallon or gallon water jug.

Do I need to audition on all pieces of equipment?

Everyone auditioning for either cast must audition on flag and movement; however, we strongly encourage those performers with weapon experience to audition on weapon as well. This will allow us a more well-rounded view of your abilities.

Is there any pre-audition homework? (i.e. technique exercises, choreography)

No, there is no pre-audition “homework”. There will be requirements for video audition submissions; however, for those planning on auditioning in person the most you may have prior to auditions is a zoom interview.

Do I have to decide which team I am auditioning for up front? If I audition for the World team and do not make it, will I be considered for the Open Team?

While we do ask on your audition form your desired team. Everyone automatically is considered for both ensembles if they are under the age of 24.

When will I find out my status?

We will email everyone their audition results by the night of Wednesday, Sept. 10th, 2025.

Will equipment be provided for auditions?

We recommend bringing your own equipment to spin; however, we will have a large number of flags you can use. Weapons are first come first serve so we recommend you bring your own, if possible.
